The house in Tregaron was a large conversion with a conservatory of over 40m2. The original part of the house was stripped to bare stone walls and the interior of all external walls were dry lined and insulated to a high standard. An extension and conservatory were added. With a large expanse of glass in the conservatory, it was a challenge to keep it heated to 20oC throughout the winter months at a reasonable cost.
Initially, our clients were not convinced that a heat pump was a good choice. The main concern was that it may not be able to cope especially in cold weather. However, we were able to produce facts and figures to show that a heat pump is preferable to an oil boiler. A 16kW air source heat pump was recommended and installed together with a large buffer tank and DHW tank sufficient for five occupants. Under floor heating was installed on the ground floor and radiators in upper floor. The system has been running for approximately three years and proved to be very efficient. An electricity meter was installed to monitor consumption and the running cost averages just under £1,000 a year. In addition, there is the added benefit of RHI payments making this project a great success.
